Who Is This For
Alone in My Head is a dystopian sci-fi drama set in the year 2033. The story follows Sinatra Constantine, a man living under an authoritarian wellness regime in a near-future society where mental health is heavily monitored and controlled through technology. Upon returning to his government-issued high-tech apartment, Sinatra undergoes an elaborate decontamination and is greeted by Lexa 8.O, his upgraded AI assistant, whose sarcastic and domineering personality contrasts sharply with Sinatraās fragile mental state.
Throughout the play, Sinatra wrestles with his bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression while navigating the oppressive mandates imposed by āThe Administrators of Wellness.ā His interactions with Lexa 8.O reveal his struggle to maintain autonomy over his own mind and body amid invasive surveillance and enforced therapy. Sinatraās skepticism towards therapy, the compulsory use of mood-regulating substances (ātranquiliā and āstimuliā), and his reluctance to fully embrace the regimeās control underscore his fight for identity and emotional freedom.
The arrival of his date, Riley, a woman involved in the underground Contrarian Movement, introduces a counterpoint to the oppressive societal order. The Contrarians reject the dominant wellness system, advocating for emotional ownership, truth, and self-empowerment beyond pharmaceutical control. Sinatraās interactions with Riley highlight his internal conflict between compliance and rebellion, hope and despair, connection and isolation. And ultimately creates a showdown between Riley and Lexa 8.O.
